About

Gray Scholarship

In 1999, the Oak Hills Educational Foundation awarded the first grants to honor the memory of William and Mildred Gray. Following the death of Mildred Gray and having no children to whom to leave his estate, William Gray decided that the award of scholarships to deserving high school students would be an appropriate way in which to see his money used. He chose Oak Hills High School as the recipient of his generosity because students would often greet him a they passed his house—a bright spot in an otherwise lonely life.

Having only a fourth grade education himself, Mr. Gray believed it important that every deserving student have a chance to attend college if so desired. Because he felt loyalty to Ohio colleges and universities, he stipulated that the scholarships in his name would be awarded only to students pursuing higher education in Ohio. Likewise, he felt that academic achievement should be only one measure of a student’s ability, and therefore insisted that other factors such as a financial need and civic and social involvement be considered of equal priority in the selection process.

Since its inception, the Gray Scholarship program under the auspices of the Oak Hills Educational Foundation (now the Oak Hills Alumni & Educational Foundation) has awarded more than $311,000 in scholarship money to graduating seniors at Oak Hills High School.
